Progression of NAFLD results in cardiovascular disease and is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in a growing number of Australians. In fact, NAFLD may pose a greater threat to cardiovascular health than established risk factors such as smoking, diabetes and dyslipidaemia.
Typically, NAFLD is asymptomatic and diagnosis is often incidental. As holistic practitioners, we are well positioned to play a pivotal role in the early identification of those patients at risk of NAFLD. Critically, we also have the knowledge and skill to implement the only recognised treatment of this emergent condition, which is embedded in appropriate diet and lifestyle interventions.
