This seminar reviews current thinking regarding a range of challenging neuropsychological disorders, including major depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, impulse control disorders and various drug addictions. Clinical trials and traditional considerations supporting the value of major herbs and nutrients are outlined, together with a systematic therapeutic framework. Underpinning this framework is the fundamental concept of neuroinflammation, a phenomenon that has only come under the research spotlight this century. Key treatment targets linked to neuroinflammation are explored, encompassing correcting mitochondrial dysfunction, downregulating inflammation and oxidative and nitrosative stress, enhancing neuroprotection and neuroplasticity, and achieving neurotransmitter regulation. Other relevant concepts touched on include the dysregulated stress response in major depression and the beneficial role of healthy sleep in all neuropsychological disorders.
