With the explosion in research this century, the role of a healthy methylation cycle has grown in significance, helped by new insights into methylation and epigenetics. But with this new wisdom has come recent controversies, particularly over the best way to supplement different forms of folate. In fact, there is now much misinformation on this topic that is confusing patients, especially circulating on the internet. For this two-part webinar series more than 2000 scientific publications were located, and around 500 of these were seleceted and drawn on in detail. The information provided is a current, comprehensive and balanced review of this important clinical topic that will challenge a number of popular myths via a fresh look at the underlying concepts.

Part 1 covers a contemporary look a the methylation cycle, folate metabolism and the key biochemistry. Crucial issues that will be discussed include the major supplemental forms of folate, the safety of folic acid, health implications of MTHFR mutations, and the role of folate deficiency in a range of health probelms. These include cognition, cardiovascular disease, microvascular health and genomic stability. The potentially game-changing issue of cerebral folate deficiency will also be introduced.

In Part 2, the role of homocysteine excess in a variety of diseases will be comprehensively reviewed, together with the implications of a related metabolic factor, asymmetric dimethylarginine. Finally, significant and recent clinical research on vitamin B12 will be discussed, followed by some pertinent information on vitamin B6 and green tea.
